Description

The ABB MS116-12 is a manual motor starter and protector providing overload and short-circuit protection combined with manual isolation for three-phase motors up to 12 A full-load current. Part of ABB’s proven MS116 range, this device is designed for motors in the 4–5.5 kW range at 400 V, offering a compact single-unit solution that replaces the need for a separate motor protection circuit breaker and thermal overload relay. The adjustable current setting allows the installer to configure the device to match the motor’s rated full-load current precisely within the rated range.

Manufactured to IEC 60947-4-1 and IEC 60947-2, the MS116-12 incorporates a bimetal thermal overload element with Class 10 tripping characteristics and an electromagnetic short-circuit release providing instantaneous fault disconnection. Phase failure protection is incorporated as standard, ensuring the motor is protected against unbalanced supply conditions that can cause accelerated thermal degradation of the motor winding insulation. The manual operator provides rated isolation capability for safe maintenance access.

The MS116-12 accepts ABB’s full range of MS116 accessory modules, including auxiliary contact blocks for run feedback signalling, alarm contact blocks for fault indication, and remote voltage or shunt releases for remote tripping applications. It mounts on 35 mm DIN rail in standard industrial control panels and is used widely in building services, food industry, water treatment, agricultural, and manufacturing applications for protection and control of motors in the 4–5.5 kW range. Its single-unit design reduces panel wiring complexity and supports co-ordinated protection system design in compliance with IEC standards.
