ABB The MS116-20 is a manual motor starter for motors up to 20A, providing motor protection with thermal and magnetic trip mechanisms.
Description
The ABB MS116-20 is a manual motor starter and protector for three-phase motors with a maximum full-load current of 20 A, providing thermal overload protection, short-circuit protection, and manual isolation in a single DIN rail-mounted unit. This is the highest current rating within the standard MS116 range, making it appropriate for motors up to approximately 9 kW at 400 V. It combines the functions of a motor circuit breaker and a thermal overload relay, simplifying panel design, reducing component count, and minimising wiring requirements in motor control panels.
Compliant with IEC 60947-4-1 and IEC 60947-2, the MS116-20 provides Class 10 thermal overload trip characteristics and electromagnetic instantaneous short-circuit release, ensuring both motor and feeder cable protection in a single co-ordinated device. Phase failure sensitivity is built in, providing protection against the hazardous effects of supply phase loss on three-phase induction motors. The adjustable current setting allows precise calibration to the motor’s nameplate full-load current within the 14–20 A range.
The MS116-20 is compatible with ABB’s MS116 accessory range, including auxiliary contact blocks for run indication and interlocking, alarm contacts for fault signalling, and remote release modules for integration with motor control logic. It is used in industrial pump and fan drives, conveyor systems, compressors, and general-purpose motor control panels for motors up to approximately 9 kW. Panel builders, electrical contractors, and industrial engineers will find the MS116-20 a reliable and cost-effective single-device motor protection solution for applications up to the upper limit of the MS116 series current range.
