Description

The ABB UA30 is a surge suppressor module designed for use with ABB AF09 to AF38 series contactors, providing protection of the contactor coil circuit against voltage surges generated by coil de-energisation. When a contactor coil is de-energised, the collapsing magnetic field induces a voltage spike that can damage the coil insulation, trigger false signals on adjacent control circuits, or cause interference with sensitive electronic control equipment. The UA30 absorbs this inductive kick by providing a suppression circuit connected in parallel with the coil, rated for control circuits in the 24–48 V AC/DC voltage range.

The UA30 snaps directly onto compatible AF09–AF38 contactors using a purpose-designed mounting interface that requires no tools and ensures correct electrical connection to the coil terminals. This integrated mounting approach ensures that the surge suppressor is always correctly connected and positioned, avoiding the risk of incorrect field wiring that can occur with separately wired suppressors. The varistor-based suppression circuit clamps the coil voltage spike to a safe level, typically reducing it to less than twice the supply voltage peak, effectively protecting both the coil and connected control circuits.

The UA30 is an essential accessory in applications where ABB AF-Line contactors are controlled from PLCs, microcontroller outputs, or proximity sensor outputs that are sensitive to inductive voltage transients. It is routinely specified in automated production machinery, building management systems, and industrial process control panels using AF09–AF38 contactors with 24–48 V control circuits. Correct surge suppression at the contactor coil is a best practice recommendation in IEC 60947 for protecting adjacent control circuits and extending the service life of the contactor coil in high-cycle applications.
