ABB The MS116-4 is a manual motor starter for motors up to 4A, providing motor protection with thermal and magnetic trip mechanisms.
Description
The ABB MS116-4 is a manual motor starter and protector for three-phase motors up to 4 A full-load current, providing co-ordinated thermal overload protection, electromagnetic short-circuit release, and manual motor isolation in a compact DIN rail-mounted unit. Part of ABB’s MS116 series, it is designed for motors in the 1.1–1.5 kW range at 400 V and eliminates the requirement for separate motor protection circuit breakers and thermal overload relays in many motor starter panel designs. The adjustable current setting allows precise protection calibration.
The MS116-4 meets IEC 60947-4-1 and IEC 60947-2 requirements, providing Class 10 tripping characteristics for standard squirrel cage motors and instantaneous electromagnetic release for short-circuit conditions. Phase failure protection is included as standard, safeguarding the motor against supply asymmetry. The device also fulfils the isolation function to its rated interrupting capacity, allowing it to serve as the sole protection and isolation device on motor feeder circuits within its rating, simplifying the overall protection scheme.
Compatible with the ABB MS116 accessory system, including auxiliary contact blocks and alarm contacts, the MS116-4 supports integration with PLC-based monitoring and control systems. It mounts on standard 35 mm DIN rail and is a popular choice for control panels in building services, food processing, water treatment, agriculture, and general industrial applications where small to medium single-speed motors require reliable, space-efficient, and standards-compliant protection and isolation. The MS116 series is one of the most widely used motor protection product families in the European electrical industry.
