The ABB PSR16 is an electronic soft starter for three-phase induction motors up to 7.5 kW at 400 V, providing controlled voltage ramp-up during motor starting to reduce inrush current, mechanical shock, and starting torque impulses. Rated at 16 A, the PSR16 covers a useful motor range in commercial and light industrial applications, making it suitable for pumps, fans, conveyors, and compressors in the 7.5 kW bracket. As part of ABB’s PSR soft starter series, it offers a simple two-parameter adjustment (initial voltage and ramp time) for straightforward commissioning in the field.

Compliant with IEC 60947-4-2, the PSR16 mounts on standard 35 mm DIN rail and is designed for integration into standard motor control panels. The thyristor-based voltage control circuit ramps the motor terminal voltage from an adjustable initial level to full supply voltage over a set time, producing a smooth and controlled start profile that reduces the peak demand on the supply network and mechanical shock to the load. A bypass contactor is recommended after run-up to minimise losses during running and to protect the thyristors from continuous load current.

The PSR16 is widely applied to pump starters for building services and water supply systems, fan drives in ventilation systems, and light conveyor drives where smooth starting is required. Its compact housing and simple adjustment make it well-suited for retrofitting into existing control panels and for use in new panel designs where a cost-effective soft start solution is required. ABB provides co-ordination data for selecting compatible contactors, overload relays, and fuses for use with the PSR16 in fully co-ordinated motor starter assemblies.
